Hi, I'm Polly. I am a Pig. I am taking a rest here, but I can still tell you all about Pigs!
Pigs are amazing animals. There are many misconceptions that have been made about us, such as we sweat too much and that we eat sloppily and that we are dirty.
Pigs are actually very smart animals who are clean. We will make our potty area away from where we eat. We are so smart we are likened to a Dog, and some say we're smarter than a three year old human child!
So let's set the facts straight. Pigs do not sweat, we are not able to, so that is why we will get into mud to cool off, though water would be a nicer option for us.
Pigs are also said to savor their food. So even though when kept we are fed "slop", a mixture of all kinds of foods, and yes we are omnivores, we enjoy our food. Being omnivores mean we eat a meat and plant based diet. So I guess when someone says "You're pigging out!" they're kind of wrong..haha
There are a lot of different types of Pigs. I am a domestic Pig, like you would find on a farm. You can see my buddy behind me is black and pink while I'm mostly pink with a bit of black on my face.
Pigs like me can be anywhere from three feet to 6 feet long! And we can weigh quite a bit, from 100 pounds to almost 800 pounds!
We have a cool snout too that is made to dig into the Earth and forage for food. When we're going to have babies and are ready for them to be born, we use our nose to dig out a place in the Earth to have our babies in. We also put things like grass in this nest or bed we make and build it up the way we like it. Then we have our babies there. We can have anywhere from a few to over a dozen piglets at a time.
We usually live anywhere from 9 to 15 years, much like a Dog or Cat.
