This lovely creature is Penelope. She is quite young and small. We caught her in the city and relocated her to the country.
Possums or O'possums as they are known as well are Marsupials. Marsupial means they have a pouch that they care for their young with. Marsupial babies are born quite undeveloped and then crawl into the pouch and develop the rest of the way. When Possum babies are ready to come out of the pouch, they cling onto their mom's fur and take a ride on her.
This Possum is known as a Virgina Possum, located in North America. This is the only Marsupial in North America.
Possums don't live very long it seems. Which is sad, but the life they do have we as animal lovers try to make as good for them as possible.
Possums are omnivores and eat all kinds of things, like corn and meat such as bologna!
Virgina Possums have prehensile tails that they can use to hold things or hold onto things with. Pretty cool!
I find Possums to be cute critters, but you shouldn't try to mess with them much as they can get quite aggressive and cause you some bodily harm if allowed to get too close. Wild animals are just that, wild, they are not domesticated and tamed towards people, so respect them and their space.
